Dear Friends
I am writing this letter to let you know that Annie my Green Anaconda had passed away on February 15th, 2012.
On February 14th, 2012 we noticed there was serosanguinous fluid (bloody fluid) in her water. We immediately contacted our veterinarian Dr. Monaco in Plainview, NY and my assistant Brian rushed her over to the office. I was working with a school to deliver chameleon eggs to Cold Spring Harbor High School and spoke with Dr. Monaco during the appointment. He had X-rays done and took a blood sample and said he belived she had an infection in her uterus (where her eggs would develop). He stated she would need to be on heavy antibiotics to fight the infection and administered the first doses. He gave Brian the remaining doses of antibiotics and sent her home. As soon as I arrived to my home I watched her to see how she was; she seemed OK and I knew all we could do was wait and hope..
That evening I went to Starbucks to take a break in Huntington and sat next to a couple of guys working doing an internet radio show. It was really fun and they reminded me to laugh! One the guys said “Everyone would love to hear stories about your snakes and reptiles!” The Internet is like a pipe line and people are waiting to watch and listen! This really pulled me out of sadness and really wanting to share Annie’s story of recovery…
Unfortunately the story didn’t turn out as I had hoped. The following morning I woke up and got dressed and checked on Annie and the other Reptile kids. As I approached Annie’s cage I immediately nocticed the red fluid in her water again; and this time when I touched Annie’s tail, it didn’t move! I began to cry uncontrollably as I knew her fate. At this point I could tell just by looking at her that she was suffering, so I called Brian and asked him to come over and told him as soon as Dr. Monaco’s office opened we would make an arrangement to put her to sleep, and put an end to any suffering she was experiencing.
We called Dr. Monaco and began making plans about what we should do with her body as she was 50 lbs. and wouldn’t fit in our freezer. So I thought of the possibilty of donating her body to science and using her hide as an educational tool to bring awareness to issues such as the illegal skin trade. Thus we made our decision and an appointment to bring her to the office to end her suffering….but when I returned I approached her cage and she had already passed on.
Annie Anaconda was an amazing animal! When I first worked with her my friend Tarzan had kept her for quite some time and gave her to me as a gift; at the time she was approx 8 1/2 feet. We actually put her out in the grass in the sun and she was very willing to allow me to pet her on her head as she slithered through the grass. Most Anacondas are not nearly as tolerant of being handled but Annie was very agreeable and didn’t seem to mind, provided that we supported her whole body. She actually only bit me once when I was at Rye Playland doing a program. I had to grasp her tail to prevent her from getting caught up in the stage wires and she gave me a swift warning bite! But that was all.
Many children had the opportunity to interact with her and even hold her!
Annie was an amazing animal till the end and will truly be missed!
Annie wherever you are…..Thank you for being such an amazing friend:)
We’ll Miss you!!
Love Erik and Friends
Dear Tumblers and ERE friends
We have new friend joining us at our ERE facility! JABA the South African Bullfrog was just purchased from Repxotica Reptile store as a captive born froglet and will be part of a weekly ERE online science activity! Students can log on to ERE website once a week to watch Jaba eat and then track his growth rate over the next year! By the end of the school year students will have collected enough data to predict how much Jaba willl grow by this time next year and will have gained some skills with data entry and maintaining a log while learning to graph data! Weekly “weigh-ins” will take place on Tuedays of each week! Weekly weigh-ins will begin on Tuesday February 29th!
All Students who participate will get some cool free stuff including ERE T-Shirts and Wrist Bands!
We’ll see you on Tuesday!!
